I'm in a mini-funk.

I wouldn't call it a Full-on Funk. Just a mini-funk. A funk-let.

I don't know what's wrong with me.

The kids and I have been having a ton of fun together this summer. We've gone to the Train Museum, Grant's Farm, movies, the pool, various parks, parades, McDonald's, all kinds of places. And really, for the most part, they've all gotten along better than I would have expected. Even in church.

I've always had what I consider to be a healthy irreverence for All Things Churchy. I think it stems from my upbringing, when I felt that people made All Things Churchy into a much bigger deal than they were to me, since church was always just part of my life. I guess I didn't take it as seriously as other people did. I don't think it's a bad thing, really. I don't think God wants us to get our knickers in a twist over who brings what to the PotLuck and where we're supposed to park when we pick our kids up from Summer PSR.

There's so much pettiness over the dumbest stuff, it takes the focus away from the important stuff. And that bugs me. So I do silly things sometimes at church-related functions. Nothing majorly disruptive or destructive, just silly.

For example, whereas many mothers of small boys dressed their sons in dress shirts and ties for the Church Directory Family Photo, I dressed mine in Matching Hawaiian Shirts. I thought it was kinda hilarious.

When we went to church last week, this is what Funkmasta T wore:

Here's what Mr. P wore today:

And yes, that's Tommy beside him, in a Hawaiian shirt.

Upon further reflection, I think I might have an idea of what's bothering me.

- We're going to Chez Inlaw on Saturday. I usually start stressing out about going there 24-48 hours before. The Aldis will be there. Oh, by the way, Aldigirl was not in the parade last weekend, but I did get a pic of her Baton-Twirling Troupe so that you could get a sense of the level of Dipshittiness I'm dealing with.

- The Baby Shower I went to last weekend reminded me that my little Beeb's birthday's coming up. I can't believe it was 9 years ago that R's mom, aunts and cousins threw a baby shower for me, after they'd known me all of about three months(For as much as I complain about FIL, there are enough totally cool members of my extended family, they almost manage to balance it out). Do other parents feel about 200 years old whenever their oldest has a birthday?

Here's a pic of that little drawstring bag I made for the New Baby, while I'm thinkin about it:

Beebie's been on my mind a lot recently for several reasons. In two weeks, she's flying solo to see Nana and PopPop for a week, then they're flying back with her and spending a week with us. She's going to have a blast with them. She and my dad are good friends, and I love to see her talking to him on the phone for an hour at a time. Beeb's looking forward to it, but I'm going to miss her. She and I have been getting along really well. She suddenly seems so much more mature to me.

- Beeb's birthday coincides with a very sad anniversary. Her friend Jack passed away a year ago on July 9th, right before her birthday. It's made me think about all the things Beeb's done in the last year, things Jack never got to do. It breaks my heart. I wonder if I'll ever be able to celebrate her birthday without thinking of him and wondering what he'd be doing if he were still with us.

- I'm feeling pudgy. My skinny clothes aren't working for me. It's weird, I've been exercising more than usual since summer started. We walk and swim almost every day. I should be losing weight, but I'm not. Of course, I'm drinking beer and eating ice cream almost every day too. So I'm starting a new diet plan. Well, really, it's more of a grocery shopping plan than a diet plan (at least, that's how I've chosen to look at it). I'm not buying any more beer or ice cream. We'll see if it makes a difference. And if it doesn't, I'll go on a beer and ice cream binge and the world can kiss my fat Irish ass.

- This house is a mess. It rained last night and I'm afraid to look in the basement to see if the laundry pile is soaked yet again.

- I was so looking forward to the upcoming snarkiness on The View when Rosie joined Star "Black Tori Spelling" Jones-Reynolds and The Other Brainless Bitches At The Table. I don't watch the show, but I would have tuned in for a Rosie/Star catfight. I'm hoping Rosie will highlight the fact that Joy Behar's really not even remotely funny.

Yeah, that's pretty much why I'm in a funk.

I am knitting The Lucy Bag pattern by Two Old Bags, so that's helping. And R's off 3 days in a row next week. Perhaps a road trip?

Hugs to you Sarah!

I hope the funk flies away soon. You are too sweet of lady to be down.

Take care.

Oh dear lord! Funkmasta T is sooo freakin' adorable! I never understood why people dressed up for church either. I mean does god love you any less if you show up in holey jeans? C'mon!

And no, you're not the only one that feels old when your oldest has a birthday. Ok, granted I've only got one kid, but the feeling is the same. Why is it the second you pop the kid out it seems like someone hit the "fast forward" button on your life?

And Beeb's going to be in the same vicinity as moi soon? I'm so honored! My peep will be in da hood!!!

Yeah, Bezz, I think God actually likes it better when you wear Hol(e)y jeans. And Hol(e)y socks.

And say the words Holy Crap a bunch of times.

Y'know who would be great on The View? Joy from My Name Is Earl. Just try to visualize that.

Point by point:
-Church blows. But at least you know that and are prepared for it. Your kids are dressed like my kids it seems, only Lola is Spiderman and Darth is, well, Darth.

-I'm sorry you have to go to your inlaws and that the Moron Family will be there. If it makes you feel better, I'll be at my inlaws too, trying to explain that the ozone is gone and we really HAVE to put sunscreen on the kids. Yes really. YES MIL THEY REALLY NEED THE SUNSCREEN!!! Ahem. Also baton twirling is lame. The only thing lamer is the rifle line of drill team and their fake rifles. Especially when the people in question are in high school. I'm so glad I dumped that guy.

-Ah, baby showers. That's all I'm going to say about them. The bag is cute what's going in it?

-Yea for Beeb's trip! That'll be fun for her!

-I think with time Jack's passing won't hurt quite so much and when Beeb's birthday comes you'll just think back on him fondly and it won't be quite so hard.

-Without beer and ice cream how will you make floats?

-So the house is a mess, big deal. Everyone's is. I hope your laundry isn't all soaked because that sucks. If it is just go back up one paragraph and make a float.

-I would watch the View if Joy was on it. Here's my Fantasy All Star The View cast: Joy (from Earl), Roseanne (before she went completely insane), and Paula Deen (From the Food Network). Yeah, that'd be SWEET!

Now I have the overwhelming urge to dress the Bug in her princess costume for mass this weekend. Her sparkly sandals are a big hit every week.

I know what you mean about "churchy" church people. They suck. I call them the "holier than thous". I also ignore them in a nice way and hang out with the choir. Crazy bunch, that, and wholly irreverent.

I was hoping for a Star/Rosie catfight too. Rats. Foiled again.

And I say buy yourself a muumuu, take your underpants off and have a Michelob and Ben and Jerry's float on me. Well, not ON me, cause that would be sticky...

Ahh, visiting the in-laws. Think of it this way, come Sunday you'll have a great blog entry!

Happy up-coming Birthday Beebs!

The bag turned out cute! I don't see the pooling you were talking about around the top. I think it looks just right. I've got the Lucy bag pattern and I've been meaning to get on that already and make it. Maybe I'll join ya in a mini-KAL? I have a 4 day weekend coming to me so I intend to get a lot done on the knitting front! Yay!

Sorry you are in a funk. Funks suck....

My life also revolved around church growing up and I understand, completely, what you are talking about. My dad was one of those people who would freak out about what we girls wore to church: no bare shoulders, no bare legs, GOD FORBID if we girls wore pants (let alone jeans) into the sanctuary. It left such a bad impression on me that I haven't been back since leaving home.

I think DO is right and eventually you will look back fondly upon Jack when Beeb's birthday rolls around. "They" always say the first year is the hardest. Maybwe it would make it easier if the two of you did a lil reminiscing on that day to remember Jack and not his death.

I am totally out of the View loop. I just saw a blurb on the Today Show this morning as I was fixing Toddling's breakfast. Star was on talking to Al about it and I heard about half of the convo. Ask me anything about Blues Clues and Backyardigans and I have that all covered. :)

Oh and yeah, your life totally goes in fast forward once you have kids. Now that I am pregnant with number two and as my due date approaches, I sit back and (cry) think about how much Toddling has grown since he was born and how he is becoming his own lil man right before my eyes. he is just getting too big, too fast.

Sorry for the funk, but I will admit, your blog entry really made me laugh. The "dipshittieness" of what you are dealing with was a riot!!

So, do what DO says, make a float and keep us laughing!

The kids are cute, cute, cute.
